Notes: This is a very long book and will require much outside of class reading! | |||||
Final Assignment:
Choose one of the following projects to complete for The Book Thief.
1. If this book were made into a movie, it would need a soundtrack. Make a soundtrack for the “movie” with at least 12 songs. Each song must tie into some part of the story. The soundtrack will need a creative and appealing, as well as original, cover. Create a list of songs and artists for the inside of the album. Also, you must provide a written paragraph for each song explaining where the song would fit into the book. Cite examples in your paragraph tying the song to the appropriate part of the book.
2. Imagine that Liesel, Max, Death, or Isla Hermann was able to make a scrapbook. Create the scrapbook as you think that character would have. The scrapbook can include pictures from magazines, newspapers, the Internet, books, etc. It must also “tell the story” of the character. I want to feel as if I am living his/her life through the scrapbook. The scrapbook must contain 10-15 pages with brief explanations of what each item represents and how/where it applies to the book.
3. Think of Max’s gift to Liesel: The Word Shaker. Create a book similar to this one. It must tell a story and relate to the novel we have read. It should also include drawings (by you of course). It should be 10-15 pages long. Be creative! Remember, the medium Max chose was painted copies of pages from Mein Kampf.
4. For those of you with artistic ability, create a sketch book of some of the things Liesel, Max, or Death would see. This is not the same as a scrapbook. This project would require you to paint, sketch, draw, color, etc. Label each picture with an appropriate quote from the book. You must have at least 10-15 scenes, people, places, things in your portfolio. Stick people are not allowed.
5. Also for you artistic people, create a sketch book of important/key characters. Create “before” and “after” sketches. Also, sketch Death. He tells us what he “isn’t” so your sketch should be what you think he would/should look like. You can choose any medium.
6. Create a graphic novel about the events of the story. Note that a graphic novel uses pictures to tell the story - not words. You will have to use words as dialogue for the characters or to help with setting, theme, tone, etc. But mostly, it will be a picture book. Not just a big picture per page, but more like three of four rows of pictures framed like a comic strip. (Think about the Maus II pages we looked at in class!)
There may be a few more options added - suggestions from students will be taken into consideration.
